DAVID NEUSTEIN

David Neustein is co-director of Other Architects, Associate of the UTS Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building, and resident architectural critic for Australian politics, society and culture journal The Monthly. He is a recipient of the Adrian Ashton Prize for Architectural Journalism from the NSW Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects and the UTS Open Agenda prize.

David was co-curator of RMIT Design Hub's Occupied (2016); co-convenor of the 2013 Affirmative Architecture symposium and the 2012 Developing Architectural Education in Response to Climate Change international workshop; and co-creative director of ‘Natural Artifice’, the 2011 Australian Institute of Architects National Conference. 

Founded in 2012, Other Architects seeks out ‘other’ approaches that challenge conventional wisdom, popular opinion and architectural trends. The Sydney-based practice undertakes diverse project types at a range of scales: current projects include a small country house, an Islamic prayer and ablutions pavilion, a boutique apartment building and a vast metropolitan cemetery. The practice’s work has been exhibited at the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial and the NGV Triennial, and has featured in numerous international publications including the Wall Street Journal and Monocle.

Alongside his Other Architects co-director Grace Mortlock, David is currently artist-in-residence at Sydney’s Carriageworks. David and Grace have been invited speakers at the Venice Architecture Biennale, MIT Media Lab, Bangkok's Chulalongkorn University and the US initiative, ‘New Cities, Future Ruins’. They were Victorian Premier’s Design Awards finalists (with Dr Fleur Watson) in 2016, and are currently finalists for the INDE Prodigy award and the small projects category of the Australian Institute of Architects Victorian awards.
